Your information

Privacy policy

How we collect, use and look after your personal information, and what you can ask us to do with it.

Who we are

This policy covers The Insurance Collective NZ Ltd (FSP1005309), an insurance brokerage based in Hastings. It explains how we handle personal information under the Privacy Act 2020, both through this website and when we look after your insurance.

What we collect

We collect only the information we need to provide the service you've asked for, use it only for that purpose unless you've agreed otherwise, and keep it secure. That can include:

  • Contact details you give us through our contact, quote or report forms: your name, email address, phone number, business name and your message.
  • Building detailsyou enter into our rebuild estimator, such as building type, size, region and the type of damage. These describe a building, not a person, and on their own they don't identify you.
  • Insurance information when you become a client: details about you, your business, your property and assets, your claims history and anything else an insurer needs to offer or manage cover.
  • Website usage information such as the pages you visit and how you use our tools, collected through Google Analytics. This doesn't include your name or contact details.

How we use it

  • To reply to your enquiry or send you the report you asked for.
  • To arrange, review and manage your insurance, and to help you with claims.
  • To follow up about your cover, but only if you've told us that's okay. You can change your mind at any time.
  • To understand how our website and tools are used, so we can improve them.
  • To meet our legal and regulatory obligations as a financial advice provider.

Who we share it with

We never sell your information. We only share it where we need to:

  • Insurers and underwriters, to get quotes, arrange cover and manage claims for you.
  • Insurance Advisernet New Zealand, which holds the licence we operate under. Client records are stored in their systems, and they may review those records to check we're meeting our obligations. Insurance Advisernet has its own privacy statement, which covers how they handle it.
  • Service providers that run parts of our business and website for us, such as website hosting, email delivery, form spam protection, analytics and secure record keeping. They can only use your information to provide their service to us.
  • Anyone the law requires, such as a regulator.

Some of these providers store or process information outside New Zealand, including in Australia, Japan and the United States. When that happens we take reasonable steps to make sure it's protected to a standard comparable to New Zealand law.

If you become a client

When we arrange cover for you, we give you a Statement of Services that includes a Privacy Collection Notice. It sets out in more detail what we collect, why, and who we share it with when we place your insurance. Ask us for a copy at any time.

Keeping it safe

Your client records are held in Insurance Advisernet New Zealand's systems, which we access as advisers under their licence. We take reasonable steps to protect your information from loss, misuse and unauthorised access. We keep it only as long as we need it for the purposes above, or as long as the law requires, and then dispose of it securely.

Cookies and analytics

Our website uses Google Analytics, which sets cookies to measure how the site is used, such as which pages are visited and which tools are popular. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and the website will still work.

Emails from us

If you ask for a report, we'll email it to you. We'll only send you anything else, such as follow ups or news, if you've agreed to it, and every marketing email has a way to unsubscribe.

Seeing or correcting your information

You have the right to ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, and to ask us to correct it if it's wrong. Contact our Privacy Officer, Ryan McBrearty, at info@insurancecollective.co.nz. We'll respond as quickly as we can, and within 20 working days at the latest.

Concerns or complaints

If you're worried about how we've handled your information, please talk to us first and we'll do our best to put it right. If you're not satisfied, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz.
